- The mwingi’s river Enziu bridge construction will cost sh30M
- Government says it is set to begin as soon as possible to avert further disaster.
- The recently impassable river saw a plunge that claimed 32 lives on Saturday, the 4th of December.
- PS. Paul Maringa insists that the construction will begin soon across the killer river.
The government is set to begin a 30 million shillings bridge construction across the Enziu river along the Nuu-Nguni route in Kitui county. The construction comes some few days after a deadly plunge of the St.Joseph’s seminary school bus carrying Mwingi catholic church choir members headed to a Nuu wedding claimed up to 32 lives in the killer river.
This is not the first such instance on the deadly river. Locals say they have lost many people in the raging waters that often end up in a death plunge. Earlier this week, Permanent Secretary Paul Maringa reiterated the government’s intention to begin the construction as soon as possible to end the misery for the locals.
The sh1.4M bridge construction is said to have stalled in 2014 after the contractor halted the project to demand sh. 250 M more from the government. Since then there have been more than 42 deaths from the same river.
President Uhuru Kenyatta says he will relay every government measure possible to make sure it is safe to cross River Enziu henceforth. The construction is set to begin soon as the bereaved families mourn their loved ones.
